Proud History!

February 23, 2014 by Cory Rose

Proud History! Five year old prodigy rapper makes song about Black History Month.

Heir Jordin (Jordin Jackson-Prince) of East Saint Louis, Illinois, son of proud father and rapper Ramel RT-FaQ Prince of the group Doorway, is releasing his debut song and video “Proud History” dedicated to showing pride for his African American culture and heritage. The five year old rapping phenom raps “I’m proud, I’m proud of my Black History, it’s history, and I’m proud” on the chorus for this anthem which amplifies and sums up the overall theme of the release. Jordin mentions historical figures Malcom X, Martin Luther King, Frederick Douglas, Rosa Parks, Gabby Douglas and more, articulating and rapping like no other five year old has done before. The video follows Heir Jordin on his journey to many East Saint Louis and Saint Louis historically Black landmarks like the Jackie Joyner Kersey Center, the Old Saint Louis Courthouse, the Delmar Loop Stars, and the Chuck Berry Memorial Statue. Heir Jordin also teams up with his brother Royale Prince (Teddy P) and an array of wild and crazy kids to further hype up the performance scenes. Come along and be amazed by the future of Hip Hop as five year old Heir Jordin releases “Proud History”, which could quite possibly be the most profound Black History song ever made.

Now Hear This: More from the Ten St. Louis Bands That Should Be Famous

December 15, 2013 by Cory Rose

Now Hear This: More from the Ten St. Louis Bands That Should Be Famous Nice print article from the Riverfront Times saying Doorway should be famous now!

By RFT Music Allison Babka: Rappers sometimes are known for waging lyrical (or worse) war on each other. Not so with Doorway: These guys have made it clear that collaboration and positivity are the keys to good tunes. A collective of individually talented artists, Doorway takes advantage of its killer songwriting chops to explore relationships, social issues, cautionary tales and more with hooks that are a little bit throwback, a little bit street and a whole lot of jam. Throw in partnerships with local titans Rockwell Knuckles and Tef Poe and Doorway has a deep, versatile song list that suits its energetic live shows well.

The beginning: A group of friends and I started Doorway back in 8th Grade at Grant Middle School in Fairview Heights. That's when I came up with Whiteout, that's when L-Gifted came up with his name, and SD was still SD (He wasn't with Doorway yet; he was still with his group Aifam). Doorway has had a lot of members over the years throughout high school and years following. In 2010, Doorway was formed into what it is now. We linked up with RT-FaQ and a few other key players over the years, and now heading into 2014 we've never been stronger.-- Nick Menn

What everyone should know about music from St. Louis: Definitely want to let all the outsiders know that there are artists of all kinds here. Not all of them are going for those "radio songs" and don't all meet the stereotype that we all sound like the rappers that were known on a national level in the past. -- RT-FaQ

All-time favorite local band: Parlor Knights. Over the past three years or so, Doorway and Parlor Knights have thrown some amazing shows together; it takes our music to the next level. They are also dope as their own entity; their music has gotten me through a lot of bullshit and has been faithfully in my rotation when I'm looking to hear something other rap music. -- Nick Menn

Guilty pleasure: Never thought in a million years that I would be singing Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" at the top of my lungs with my eyes closed so tight that a year pops out, but it happened two days ago. -- RT-FaQ

Classic MTV-era music video they'd redo: I would love to re-create "The Real Slim Shady" video! It is such an iconic song/video from my grade school days, back when I was one of those kids bleaching my hair. -- L-Gifted

Goon Road: Hill One Indiegogo

November 18, 2013 by Cory Rose

Goon Road: Hill One Indiegogo Goon Road is the name of an actual road located in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Goon Road has a haunted history & was also the go-to place for partying and drugs during Nick Menn's teen years. The project will be a concept based on the dark history of the road as well as heavy drug usage. It is meant to blur the perceived lines between reality, life, and death... and will be split into three EPs (there also happens to be three hills on Goon Road). With many layers and symbols spread throughout the expansive project, it will give listeners a chance to find something new with each listen. When asked to describe the overall concept, Nick Menn said "To me, Goon Road is the perfect American, drug-induced horror story. The 3 EPs, or 'hills', represent the ups-and-downs often exaggerated by the choices we make in our lives."

"Stand Out Indie Act Of @A3C Is Doorway"

October 27, 2013 by Nick Menn

Shoutout to Crazy al Cayne at SugarCayne.com who wrote about us being the standout Indie act at A3C this year.

"When we went to Little 5 Points to go check out the Mass Appeal show at the Star Bar for the A3C HipHop Festival we saw this act performing in the parking lot behind the spot. They had this blacked out RV that was setup with a loud ass system and a window for the DJ and a booth with their merch setup next to their van and I was like” this is dope”! The name of the group is named Doorway and not only was I impressed by their presentation and setup I was equally impressed with their music and performance. Their music style wasn’t the Boom Bap HipHop that I love but it was still very good. If there’s one thing besides Ghostface show that I’ll always remember about A3C, it will be Doorway!"

THE COLISEUM + THE FORCE PRESENTS: NAPPY ROOTS x BLACK SPADE x FAMILY AFFAIR x DOORWAY x TEF POE & COREY BLACK

July 11, 2013 by Cory Rose

THE COLISEUM + THE FORCE PRESENTS: NAPPY ROOTS x BLACK SPADE x FAMILY AFFAIR x DOORWAY x TEF POE & COREY BLACK TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!!

NAPPY ROOTS:

Country and proud of it, Nappy Roots formed in 1995 around a sextet of students attending Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Four members of the group were Kentucky natives (Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, and Big V), bolstered by a pair of Oakland-born transplants (R. Prophet and Milledgeville). Nappy Roots began making music together at a local record shop-cum-studio named ET's Music, and released their full-length debut, Country Fried Cess, in 1998. Drawn to the group's distinctive twist on Southern bounce, the major labels began flocking, and they eventually signed to Atlantic. Their label debut, Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz, was released in 2002, and the follow-up, Wooden Leather, arrived one year later. After several delays, the group released its anticipated album The Humdinger in August 2008; it was the first not to feature R. Prophet, who had left the group to pursue a solo career. Their second album as a quintet, The Pursuit of Nappyness, was issued two years later. ~ John Bush, Rovi
